Overdue Workout tonight

Tonight I ran 2 miles and it has long been overdue. It has been a stressful month and I haven't worked out in months. I'll willing to bet it would not have been as stressful if I had worked out sooner. Tonight felt so great to run and alleviate some of the stress still lingering from the holidays!

Ben & Jerry's Call for Equality

The statement that was published by Ben & Jerry's about their view that Black Lives Matter brought tears to my eyes while making me want to jump on the table and rejoice at the same time. I don't know what that exact emotion is but I definitely don't have an issue praising the owners of Ben & Jerry's for standing up and expressing their views.
I have listed below several quotes that were the most awe-inspiring. This is not the entire message I urge you to check out the full message with the link listed below.

"We understand that numerous Black Americans and white Americans have profoundly different experiences and outcomes with law enforcement and the criminal justice system. That’s why it’s become clear to us at Ben & Jerry’s that we have a moral obligation to take a stand now for justice and for Black lives."

"And it’s clear, the effects of the criminal justice system are not color blind."

"We want to be clear: we believe that saying Black lives matter is not to say that the lives of those who serve in the law enforcement community don’t. "

Favorite line:
"We do not place the blame for this on individual officers. Rather, we believe it is due to the systemic racism built into the fabric of our institutions at every level, disadvantaging and discriminating against people of color in ways that go beyond individual intent to discriminate. For this reason, we are not pointing fingers at individuals; we are instead urging us to come together to better our society and institutions so that we may finally fulfill the founding promise of this country: to be a country with dignity and justice for all.

So moved by their message and I hope other corporations come forward and offer their support for the Black Lives Matter movement. As this is a courageous step for them to take and I will definitely show my support by buying more Ben & Jerry's ice cream.. brightly soo..

Wednesday.. Ohh what a hott day

Today it was a beautiful day BUT it was very hott! Don't ask me why I decided to wear a light sweater but that was what I had chosen for today's ensemble.
I chose a white top from H&M and a light blue yoga swing sweater, black leggings and finished off the outfit with brown Vince Camuto booties. Accessories are from personal family jewelry collection.
And flowers are from Trader Joe's!

Late Night Workout... Reached Benchmark

Tonight I was in need of a late night workout! Just finished up my workout at 11:19!! And it was definetly what I needed as a pick me up as I have to work 2 more days this week!  There is nothing like running late at night and feeling the wind on your back and it's not the sun beaming down on you. I ran a different route tonight and it was a short 20 minute run but oh soo worth it!!
Also tonight I reached a benchmark of running a total of 2 marathons total( 52.4 miles)
This was a great ending to the workout!  This has made me want to run a total of one more marathon or 26.2 miles for the month of August the hottest month of the year!
I have included a screenshot of my "trophy" for running!

Favorite Quotes from Michelle Obama's DNC Speech

Today I was reading the manuscript from Michelle Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention.  These are my 3 favorite quotes from her oh soo awe-inspiring, goose bump causing, jump on a chair and throw your hands in a chair for Hilary Clinton and for women in general speech!!

“Heroes of every color and creed who wear the uniform and risk their lives to keep passing down those blessings of liberty, police officers and the protesters in Dallas who all desperately want to keep our children safe.”

“Leaders like Hillary Clinton who has the guts and the grace to keep coming back and putting those cracks in that highest and hardest glass ceiling until she finally breaks through, lifting all of us along with her.”

“That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves.”

Monday Quote Motivation

Today's quote for the day was very insightful and caused me to reflect on how I treat myself when I'm alone and also when I am around others.

I know that I can be my biggest critic as I know that sometimes it's so easy to focus  on the bad things and fixate on what could be better and what I did wrong. But we have to remember to practice self love and that begins mainly with our thoughts. I know that I have been actively focusing on staying positive and increasing the amount of positive affirmations that I say daily. As your head and innermost thoughts guide you and you definetly want to have your head and heart in a positive space.

Lastly the last portion of the quote encourages you to take in consideration the words that you speak around others. This is as equally as important as the first portion of the quote. I want the words that I speak to others to be positive and uplifting and real. By taking that extra moment to pause before I speak to assess that whatever is going to pour out of your mouth is a correct reflection of what's in my soul.
This quote is something I will think about throughout the week as words are soo powerful!

Brightly Soo,

Karen B

Top 5 Picks for Nordstrom Sale

             TOP  5 PICKS

This is my Top 5 Picks from the Nordstrom Sale. There are soo many items on sale and this was very difficult but necessary! The 5 items are essentials for the fall season and I know I will use a pair of the boots at least once a week. The boots are definitely a staple item. So take a seat and see what you think of my list!!

1.       Tory Burch Boots - They are only priced at $299.90! This is a great deal and will be my FALL staple item! The leather of the boots a great quality and will go well with my FALL outfits. This is my favorite item of the sale!

2.       Tory Burch Heidi Ballet Flat: These flats are trendy and comfortable for FALL. I already have these classic flats in  gold and think that this color and print will go well for FALL.  The sale price is $164.90 and will go up at the end of the sale. These flats will pair well with creams, black and neutrals!

3.       Vince Camuto Peera Cutout Bootie-  These booties are on sale for $99.90 and I plan on putting them to good use this summer as well. They will pair well with a couple of my summer dresses and look very chic with dark denim and cream top for a date night! Can't wait to wear these!!

4.       Barefoot Dreams Drape Front Cardigan-  This cardigan is soo soft and had to go on my list. I believe in wearing chic clothing but also comfort is key.  The versatility of this cardigan will allow this to be used easily in the spring as well. The cardigan is only $59.90 and is offered in several other colors. The other colors  that are offered is  an ombre effect which made it difficult to choose this pastel pink color. I chose this color because it can  be used more often this upcoming season!

5.       Illuminage Skin Rejuvnating Pillowcase-This pillow is $45 although that may seem expensive the cost is worth it considering the pillow is supposed to aid in wrinkle reduction. Although I am in my 20s it is  never too early to start trying to save yourself from wrinkles! Even if the pillowcase doesn't work it feels amazing on your face and is lovely to sleep on!

Thank you for taking the time to go through my list! Leave comments below and let me know what you think! Thanks!

Necessary Short Trip Home

I took a short road trip home to see my family and it was so nice!! I am all around a daddys girl and I am glad i was able to have great father daughter time wth him. Sometimes you can get so caught up in being an adult that it's so refreshing to spend the witb your dad and feel like a little girl again.

Wouldn't trade it for the world. We all watched the Olympic Trials and cheered for our favorite athlete! It reminded me of being a little first grader flipping around my parents living room while watching the gymnastics portion of the Olympics. Lol! Good times!!!
So glad I too the trip as I feel like my soul has refilled with that special kind of love that only your closest family can fill!

Reflection for today

I have such a heavy heart right now. This whole ordeal in Dallas is just so upsetting. This shooting casts a shadow over a peaceful protest that is bringing attention to a cause that  truly matters. Black lives matter plain and simple. The fact that black lives matter should not mean that police lives don't matter either. But the reality is that as an African American woman I do live in fear of being pulled over from policemen. I do live in fear for my family, my brothers, my father, my man. They are black men.  And right now the way things are, I have a right to be concerned.

I just pray that everyone can come together in this time and they spread love and not hate. Because at the end of the day we are all humans and we should all matter.

National Yoga Day 6/21/2016

Today is National Yoga Day! In honor of this national day I have included a picture of 30 yoga poses to try out. I've been practicing yoga for years and my main goal is to try to perfect the handstand. This requires a great core and sense of balance and strength. It is very much possible but will take a lot of hard work!

Yoga has sooo many great health benefits. Every single time that I complete a group session I always feel such a high level of peace and feeling centered.

When you are focused on each pose and even regulating your breathing this allows you to really lose focus of all of your worries and focus on the here and now.
My main source of stress and anxiety is linked to me worrying about the future and not being present in the here and now. Practicing yoga gently forces me to stay present. I highly recommend everyone to try it. It will change your life!  Happy#NationalYogaDay! #namaste

Have you seen the Strawberry Moon?

Today marks the start of summer with the summer equinox AND there is a full moon tonight. The last time this has occurred was in 1967! And the next time this will happen will not be until 2062. And to top it all off its the second Sagittarius full moon which a a rarity in itself. As usually there is only one moon per sign each year.

I definitely was feeling the energy this morning when I woke up of the upcoming event. I woke up with a great sense of clarity and positivity.

I have included links to some great articles about this special cosmic day.

Although some of the articles are very detailed and mainly geared towards advanced astrologers , it's worth your time to muddle through as you will definitely come across something insightful.

Unexpected Conversations

Today has been marked by me being involved in very unexpected conversations. I was able to build a closer rapport with a coworker about common interests. Very unexpected as we hadn't had a conversation more than the casual hi and bye and  this was a great surprise for the day.

The other conversation involved my very personal and deep conversation with my Madre aka my mother. We talked for almost 4 hours and it  was incredibly enriching to my soul. There is no monetary value that can be used to describe what this conversation meant to me.
The older that I get the more that I realize how similar me and her are. Growing up I was a daddy's girl and now that I'm older I appreciate everything  more that my Madre has to offer. So much experience and knowledge and above all her uncanny way of just being real and a strong woman.
Me and my mother's rapport is something I don't take for granted and I am incredibly blessed to have a mother like her. So cheers to you Madre for being so amazing.  And cheers to the unexpected!!

Short 2 Mile Fun Run @ 8pm

Today I ran a short 2 mile run and it was exhilarating to say the least.
My goal was to try to do a quick run and then have enough time in the evening to run a couple of errands.
Today's run was quick and I paced the route to include sprinting and also some walking as well. Todays run was 25 minutes and included 12:26 per mile. At this point in my running journey I think it is good to include my times so I can stay accountable and have a great gauge of my fitness level.

Top 5 Songs from Running Playlist:

1. See You Again by Rukhsana- Love the introductory notes of this song!!
2. So Good by Johnny Stimson- Great to run along to!
3. Breathe by Stanton Lanier- Song didn't have lyrics great for cool down.
4. I love you by Lanita Smith- <3 Song
5. The Light was Already Here by Alex Preston- Great for middle of workout.

These songs were on my Discover Playlist by Spotify. The songs are suggested based on my current music library and so they were pleasant surprises for the run! This workout was a great way to keep my energy up on this hump day!

Oh Mercury Retrograde

Mercury Retrograde ended yesterday and I have never felt so relieved. These past couple of weeks definitely have been marked with confusion and miscommunication and even unnecessary words that can't be taken back. This is the usual circumstances when mercury the planet of communication goes retrograde.
The first time I had heard of Mercury Retrograde was in a Cosmopolitan  magazine by the Astrotwins. It was written in a way that anyone who is not familiar with astrology would understand.  If you aren't familiar with mercury retrograde either,  I have listed the 3 key concepts  to remember for when

1. Don't sign contracts during this time period as usually the terms aren't very clear at the time of signage or someone could change their mind. Try to postpone contracts of all kinds  including  new job contracts ,leases and major purchases.
2. Past friends and lovers will randomly show up or will run across your mind as well. I've seen this happen time and time again with my friends and even in my life. Proceed with caution as nothing is as it appears and things will make more sense when mercury goes direct. So hold on!
3. Expect delays. As things will be slowed down in travel, technology and travel. Mercury rules all of these areas so they will be affected. So make sure you plan ahead. I always think about Murphys Law anything that can go wrong will go wrong. So make sure your flight is booked  and and you have that spare tire just in case. I always keep my travel to a minimum  during this people

*Also the positive effects of this period is that it causes you to slow down and review key areas in your life. As this time is necessary to discuss issues that you may have in your close relationships. So make sure you really slow down and review. Don't recommend for you to take action until mercury goes direct as things will be much clearer.

Hopefully you didn't have any major mishaps during retrograde period.
I hope my tips are helpful for you as the next time Mercury goes Retrograde. The next  retrograde period is at the end of August!  I am most definitely not looking forward to it. Lol!

This day 2 years agoo....

This day 2 years ago I graduated from college with my bachelor's degree! This day 2 years ago I had bookmarked in my calendar for years. A day I had worked for 16 long studious years to receive that amazing piece of paper that  showed it was all worth it.  Graduating with my diploma on 5/10/2014 I had so many dreams and wishes for what I could accomplish. I can honestly say I could not have gotten there without the help of so many people including friends and family and even the support of my ex-partner. And even today looking back on that day I realize I have accomplished and learned  so much in the span of these past 2 years. Life lessons. Workplace lessons. Identity lessons. Women lessons. Health lessons. These are all lessons that a college education can't solve for you or prepare you for. The only way to deal with them is to experience them and learn from them. I can definetly say a college education is necessary in my field of work but it definitely is not a representation of my life experience. Today as I celebrate 2 years being free from thosr grueling finals and stressful midterms I will spend the day savoring my freedom because it will not last long. As my next step is to start preparing for my admissions tests for my masters in the fall. So drinks tonight🍸🍹 but tough studying is ahead in the next couple of months! Let's go!!!

100 Year-old Woman Runs 100 meters

Today's recent post on bing today highlighted Ida Keeling who is 100 years old and ran the 100 meter dash with a time of 1:17! This in itself is sooooo inspiring. I actually  imagine my mother running at 90 years old as well. She will probably run until the ripe age of 100 as well. I feel lucky to have her as a fitness role model. As a kid she would run in the USA Track and Field Open/Masters Division. She trained and ran in the track meets in the summer.  She actually is training for a meet that's this upcoming  month. Her fitness work ethic is something that is rare for people her age.
I don't know what the future holds but I can only hope that I will be as active as my mom or even Ms.Ida!!

Sore Muscles and a PR kind of day

Today was a great workout! Although I felt a little tight in my muscles. But I was able to keep running and hit a personal record today. I know I will be sore tomorrow. But sooo worth it.  I can't explain that feeling of hearing my phone's applause when I have completed my workout and hit a PR. Today's workout was like my usual runs on a trail. I love the feeling of running outside and being surrounded by nature and feeling the actual wind in your hair and not the AC at the gym. 99% of my workouts are trail running and I only go to the gym when I have to get a workout in and the weather is extremely uncomfortable. But today's conditions were ideal to allow me to hit the PR. My goal is to continue to shed minutes each week off of my mile time. MY goal is to run a 6:18 mile like I did when I was much much younger. I used to run the 1500 and that was one of my best times. So I am taking it a step further and hoping to hit that time with the additional 100 meters. I realize that in order to hit this goal I have to stay consistent and work hard each and every workout! Lets go!!

Motivational quote of the day!

#International Womens Day March 8th

Yesterday was International Womens Day and I can't help but feel proud to be a woman in 2016.
There are so many things to be proud of especially as a black woman.  In this day and age you can find yourself shying away from reaching your full potential just because of so many heavy expectations and limitations set by society in general in being a black woman. But there are so many strong and inspiring woman(Oprah, Michelle Obama, Beyonce, Shonda Rhimes and Kerry Washington to name a few) throughout history who have defied the odds and overcome obstacles to show that you can achieve your dreams. Today in 2016 even though are so many controversial issues surrounding my culture and are tied to being an African American I still can't help but feel blessed to have all of the opportunities I do in 2016. 100 years ago my ancestors had a different type of battle and I know I will not be doing anyone any favors by not reaching my full potential and achieving my dreams!

And the Training Continues March 3rd 2016

Today was a light day especially since I am trying to be more consistent with my running. Last week I took the whole week off because I have been preparing for a move. And oh how I wish I had slipped in at least 2 workouts that week. My stress level would have been way more manageable.
But we live and we learn and I definitely will NEVER go a week without running again.
My goal is to run a half marathon by the end of August but I wanna add 2 more tangible goals to the list. This will allow me to stay dedicated and I know I will feel more empowered after knocking out 2 more milestones.

So I am putting it in writing so I have something to go back to. They say if you write down a goal you are more likely to accomplish it.

1. Run Timed 5k by March 31st.

2. Run Timed 10k by June 20th.

Overall Goal is to Run Half Marathon by the end of August

I also have to mention that I am very eclectic and listen to all kinds of music when I run!! Just a warning before you see the playlist! And I listen to great music so check out some of the songs!

Music Playlist for Today's Workout

1. Consideration by Rihanna
2. Respect by Aretha Franklin
3. 11 Something by Sumerella
4. Powerful by Major Lazer, Ellie Goulding

Oh Foggy Day

Today as I was driving to work there was a thick fog that covered majority  of the highway. I couldn't help but think that the fog was there as an obstacle and and a reminder that life is unapologetically unpredictable and so many things are out of our control and direct line of vision.  And it's so easy to stay focused on the past and find yourself being stagnant out of  fear of  making a change.

But in order to fully grow we have to be fully present  and fully committed to taking tangible steps of making a positive change in our life.
Being present means not focusing on the past and letting guilt and regret and even
shame keep you from reaching your full potential.  In order to experience those negative feelings you have to look to the past but by being present you are forced to see your current situation as an opportunity. Additionally by taking tangible steps that are creating positive changes in your life you are reaffirming to yourself that you are moving forward and letting go of the past.
We must take into account that although things may seem foggy up close but by taking a step back and looking over the horizon there are endless possibilities for us to be successful! Don't be afraid to take that first step!
